Nearby Mirissa harbour is the departure point of the whale watching boats. During the season the chance of seeing the difficult and desired Blue Whale is quite high and probably the most reliable site in the world. The Blue Whale is the largest creature ever to have lived on earth. Their tongues alone can weigh as much as an elephant. Their hearts, as much as a car.

The Blue Whales are not the only attractions in the warm Indian Ocean. You may also see Bryde’s whales, Sperm whales, Fin whales and sometimes Orcas and Killer whales.

Dolphin varieties include Common dolphins, Bottlenose dolphins, Spinner dolphins, Risso’s dolphins and Striped dolphins. Sometimes the dolphins are found in very large groups.

Turtles, Whale sharks, Tuna fish and flying fish are also seen at different times of the year.

We can organise trips and recommend the environmentally conscious and original Sri Lankan operator “Raja & the Whales”.
